My Thoughts

I prepared myself for the worst. How good could a racing game be on a cell phone? I was surprised that Asphalt: Urban GT is a completely competent and decent racing game for the cell. The visuals and gameplay reminded me of the original Top Gear on the Super NES.

The best part about the game is that the accelerator is always on, so you don’t have to worry about hitting an additional button. After I played this I tried a couple of other cell racing games like 2 Fast 2 Furious and you had to press a button to accelerate. This hampered those games because the phone I played it on didn’t recognize a multiple button press at the same time, so if I wanted to accelerate, I couldn’t turn and vise-versa. I kept losing my place because I would be forced to slow during turns. For Asphalt, the only things I had to worry about were steering and hitting the nitro. The worst thing about the game were the atrocious load times. It took as long to load a race as it did to actually race it. I hope you have plenty of spare time to wait.

There are a few racing modes; instant race, race, and duel. Instant race is just that, you choose the track, car, and then go race. Arcade mode contains race and duel. Race mode pits you against seven other racers. A race against other drivers is all well and good, except that the other racers all drive the same car that you do. Not only that, but their cars look like the size of SUV’s when you pass them. Duel mode is a race against a single opponent for a large bet of cash. These races are a little tougher than the normal races.

In all the modes the cops show up and attempt to stop your car. The cops will try to push you off the road and lay spike strips. If you out run the cops a helicopter will try to sniper your car. I didn’t know what the heck was going on when I first saw the helicopter extending a rod towards my car, but it turns out it's supposed to be a laser sight. I thought it might pick me up to force me to stop, but I continually out ran the chopper. I eventually let the copter’s rod touch me and was instantly stopped.

Pick-ups that can help or harm you litter the tracks. These include turbo, cash, and slows (slows are bad). There is also a pick-up that gives you diplomatic immunity so the cops will leave you alone. Even with getting stop by the law or accidentally picking up slows, I was able to constantly place first in every race. The difficulty of the game is pretty slim, even while in the slightly harder and cop-filled duel races.

As you’re racing you can cause “urban havoc” to other racers and civilian traffic. Put the hurt on your opponents and you’ll be rewarded with extra money at the end of the race. As you earn more money you unlock new tracks and cars.  After everything is unlocked there isn’t really a reason to keep playing, unless you really feel the need to cause as much urban havoc as you can.

The 3D version of Asphalt: Urban GT is not much different than the non-3D version. The only real differences are the fancy 3D graphics and improved music. Asphalt was a good game to begin with, so the better visuals only make a marginal improvement overall. Everything else, from the game modes to the decent sense of speed to the pick-ups and nitros are exactly the same. Cops still chase after you and a helicopter still attempts to taser your ride with a protruding rod.

The goal of the game is to partake in races to unlock more tracks and more cars by earning loads of cash by winning races. For those that have played a previous version, there are no added tracks or cars. My biggest complaint of the regular version, where all the opponent cars are the same as yours, has not been changed. I thought with the bump to a 3D world there could also be races where other cars exist aside from the one you drive, but apparently not. At least the opponents' cars are no longer the size of Hummers.

Asphalt: Urban GT 3D is a very good mobile racing game, but if you’ve played a previous version there is no need to play this one. If you haven’t yet played the game yet and enjoy racing games then this is one to get.
