Cowboy Bebop on Blu-ray in 2014

Funimation announced some huge news at Otakon 2013 this weekend; they will be bringing Cowboy Bebop to Blu-ray in 2014, along with many other Sunrise titles. After Bandai Entertainment closed their U.S. branch we were all left wondering if we would ever see any of their shows on Blu-ray over here, mostly Gundam and Cowboy Bebop for me. Well, Funimation and Sentai Filmworks have obtained the licenses for distributing many of Sunrise's properties previously distributed by Bandai. Chief among them is the amazing Cowboy Bebop, possibly the greatest anime ever. Check out the Coming Soon trailer, which is the opening with text of the announcement peppered in.

There is no date yet, so right now it's just 2014. Funimation also got many Sunrise's other shows and here's a handy list of these rest of what they currently have:

You're favorite faces coming soon in HD.

  • Angel Links
  • Banner of the Stars
  • Banner of the Stars II
  • Code Geass Lelouch of the Rebellion
  • Code Geass Lelouch of the Rebellion R2
  • Code Geass Lelouch Akito the Exiled
  • Cowboy Bebop
  • Crest of the Stars
  • Escaflowne the Movie
  • My-Hime
  • My-ZHime
  • My-ZHime O~S.ifr~
  • My ZHime Zwei
  • Outlaw Star
  • Passage of the Stars: Birth
  • Tales of the Abyss
  • The Visions of Escaflowne
  • Witch Hunter Robin

I am incredibly excited to get Bebop on Blu-ray, along with the fantastic Outlaw Star. These will probably be day one buys for me.

And, just so we know exactly which shows of Sunrise's have been licensed, here are Sentai Filmworks' acquisitions:

  • Argento Soma
  • Betterman
  • The Big O
  • The Big O II
  • Brain Powered
  • The Girl Who Leapt Through Space
  • Infinite Ryvius
  • Kurokami The Animation
  • Overman King Gainer
  • s-CRY-ed
  • Sacred Seven
  • Z-Mind
  • Zegapain

This is a ton of good news for anime fans. Hopefully it's only a matter of time before one of these two companies announces Gundam titles. Keep in mind that all these titles might not make it to Blu-ray right away, but have patience and... oh wait, Brain Powered is on the list?! Awesome!
