Double Dragon EX -Bandai/Eolith (2005) -played on a Sanyo 8200
Summary Jimmy and Billy beat hordes of little bald men with their fists… wait, what?
Double Dragon, one of the original side-scrolling beat-um-up classics comes to the mobile. It’s also an “EX” version so it’s supposedly better than a normal Double Dragon; not that you can tell, that is. The graphics are typically Double Dragon and get the job done. It’s easy enough to see all the people you need to beat up and the weapons that they drop. You know how the game works. Billy and Jimmy Lee move from point A to point B by beating the crap out of a seemingly endless steam of bad guys that look exactly the same. Back in the day the most popular of these baddies was the bald strongman Abobo. Abobo comes in a few different colors in this version. There is regular Abobo, rock hard stone gray Abobo, and Hulk Abobo. There are bosses but they aren’t much more of a problem to take down then their cronies. All of the fighting moves from the past Dragons return such as jump kicks, and grab and knee in the face. There’s no reason to have to perform them, though. All you really need to do is continually tap punch to get the job done. If the controls weren’t so unresponsive it may be worth doing the other moves. Hit the punch button… wait… wait… see the punch on screen. You do need two hands to play this game. You can’t one hand it like many games ported to the mobile platform. Double Dragon EX is really only half of a game as there are only three stages. You don’t actually fight the “real” last boss or see the end of the story. This begs the question, will there be a sequel? If there is it won’t be a sequel but the second half of the game. If it’s as good as this though, I’ll take a pass. If you have already played Double Dragon or any of its sequels in the arcade or on the NES (and who really hasn’t?), then you have no reason to play this version.
