-Bandai/MSF (2003) -Played on a Sanyo 8200 Summary It’s not nice to keep your Gundam submerged for extended periods of time. My Thoughts
The entirety of Mobile Suit Gundam: Atlantic Battle takes place underwater. I don’t know why you’d want an underwater Gundam game since Gundams don’t spend a whole lot of time in the ocean, but it works for the most part. With the game in the drink, it eases the control of the game. There is no need to jump because the Gundam can be moved in any direction at any time. The only weapons the Gundam has are the beam saber and hyper hammer. The Gundam has no guns in this game, which is odd considering all the enemies do. Is White Base out of ammo from a recent mission or did the developers want to make the game a challenge by limiting the Gundam’s options? I would have to say the latter since the game is incredibly short. This also helps to lengthen the game out a bit because if the Gundam had any guns or lasers, taking out the enemies would be easy and the game would seem even shorter. The structure of the game is comprised of rooms. The Gundam must clear out each room of enemies or avoid them to make it to the next. There are multiple boss encounters with larger mobile suits, mobile armor, and ultimately the Zeon ace Char, himself. There are also two modes of play to choose from; Story Mode and Attack Mode. However, the only difference in the two is that Attack Mode lacks the story elements. That means there really isn’t a difference in either mode. The graphics are very good. The Gundam and Zeon mobile suits are very faithfully represented, as are the characters. Throughout the game mugs of the characters will appear on screen and talk to each other and further the brief story. It’s all kind of anti-climatic though, because it’s such a short game. As for music there is only a small Gundam midi that plays over and over. Gundam: Atlantic Battle has excellent presentation and good controls, but it’s just over way too soon. As such it can only recommend to die-hard Gundam fans.
