Summary

The Hulk may be mighty tiny, but he is still packed with a full serving of anger and rage.

My Thoughts

The Leader has a new scheme to control the minds of the world’s population. This makes the Hulk so angry that he’ll smash though the military and cities to find Leader and end his nefarious plan.

In The Incredible Hulk: Rampage, you take control of both the Hulk and his smarty-pants alter ego Bruce Banner. Each character has their own useful skills needed to progress in the game. Banner can fit into smaller spaces, operate computers, use keycards, keys, and batteries. The Hulk does all the fighting and can climb over certain objects that Banner cannot. Although, I find it odd that the Hulk just couldn’t smash his way through any obstacle to make smaller holes bigger so he could fit through and that he lacks his jumping ability. I guess those would lessen the importance of being able to turn back into Banner, though.

When it’s time to fight Banner will automatically turn into the Hulk. The hulk fights off soldiers, stationary turrets, tanks, robots, and must avoid deadly air raids. Combat is usually fun because the Hulk can power punch the soldiers across the screen, lift up and throw barrels, tanks and vehicles that cause nice explosions. Sometimes effectively lining up and attacking the soldiers can be difficult because they are always running away when the Hulk charges towards them. You can transform Banner into the Hulk without the fighting and vice-versa, but you need to find an area where an up or down area is located.

Rampage has seven stages divided into desert, office, warehouse, city, and skyscraper locales. Each level is of a good length; however, it’s mainly due to all the backtracking required to collect keys, find objects, or open doors. It becomes a little tiring having to walk through the same area two, sometimes three times just to complete the level. At least the game will automatically save at checkpoints throughout each level. Also, throughout the course of the game, character pics and text will pop-up and progress the story.

Overall the hit detection is good, but there is one level where Banner must navigate through a maze of radioactive pipes in order to enter a smaller opening. If he touches the pipes he turns into the Hulk and must go to the beginning to start over. This was the most frustrating part of the game because your movement of Banner must be exact. Plus, there were plenty of times when I obviously was not touching a pipe but he transformed anyways. I was on the verge of Hulk-smashing the phone myself. Also, the final boss battle isn't even with Leader! The Hulk needs to fight three flying robots. Since the Hulk can't jump this works about as well as trying to ice skate uphill.

While Rampage does have some Hulk anger-inducing quirks, it does have some excellent and detailed graphics. The top-down view stages are colorful and needed items are easy to spot. The sound is also very good, with plenty of smashing and Hulk yelling.

In addition to the story mode, there is also Smash Mode. Here, you take control of the Hulk and have only two minutes to kill all the guards, and destroy all the turrets and tanks that show up. These five stages can be pretty difficult because there are a lot of enemies that arrive to put an end to the big green angry man, but it does let you smash everything in sight. And that is what the Hulk is really best at.

Score: 7.0
