Summary

The Metal Slug encounters “stiff resistance.”

My Thoughts

The Metal Slug games have always been difficult, but are excellent platforming shooters. While many cell phone game translations turn out to be of poor quality, there are some games that do translate well; unfortunately Metal Slug Mobile is not one of them.

The graphics are of the undeniable Metal Slug style. Fierce, big-headed soldiers endlessly come at your blonde hero with guns knives, rockets, and the occasional helicopter. The visuals look good on the small phone screen and the multitude of flying bullets are easy enough to see. The developers decided to be generous and added a health bar. The one-hit kills of the bigger Metal Slugs are gone. There are plenty of crates to demolish that house food to replenish health and power-ups like machine guns. The game also has a stage select so you can go about it one missions at a time. That is where the good of this game ends, though.

What makes Metal Slug fail on the mobile front is that the whole game moves slower than a snail trapped in molasses. Every time you shoot you wait a few seconds until the bullets actually hit their target. The uber-slow pace is a far cry from the fast, intense action of its arcade brethren. I could understand slowing the game down a bit to be easier to control on a usually non-gaming device, but this is way too far. The controls also leave a lot to be desired, but it’s mainly because of the slow pace. Aiming in all the directions to take out enemy soldiers is possible, but only by using the number pad. You won’t get too far by just using the directional pad. Only two of the stages feature the Metal Slug mini tank. You don’t find a tank to jump into like the arcade and console Slugs; you just start the stage already in a tank. Once you get used to the sluggish gameplay the game isn’t to difficult to finish. It’s just that a game that used to be fun is now annoyingly tedious.

Unfortunately, the most entertaining part of the game was a couple of the level names. Five of the seven are somewhat normal, but “Stiff Resistance” and “The Final Push” are obviously a bit humorous. Metal Slug Mobile makes me a sad Metal Slug fan.

Score: 3.5
