Mortal Kombat Some-Kind-of-Rebirth Trailer (UPDATE)

What is this new live-action Mortal Kombat video for? A new movie? A new game? Both? The lengthy near 8-minute long video is a more realistic and gritty take on characters from Mortal Kombat with Michael Jai White as Jax and Jeri Ryan as Sonya. The YouTube user this video was posted under is called MortalKombatRebirth. Whether "Rebirth" is the actual title of this project or if it's just a name stating that it's a Mortal Kombat reboot is anyone's guess. Some of the MK fanboy purists may take issues with the drastic changes, but I'm a MK fanboy from the old-school days and this looks seriously awesome. If it is for a new movie then it definitely looks better than MK: Annihilation. Hell, just about anything is better than Annihilation. And poor Johnny Cage. That guy never gets a break.

Hmm, well that was fast. Apparently Jeri Ryan herself posted this on her Twitter account: "Okay, so... Mortal Kombat. It's not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film. [...] I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was. And I'm not sure how you can contact WB to push them to make it. But you guys are resourceful...!" (via Destructoid)

So it's not a trailer for anything, it's just for hopefully something. It kind of sucks knowing that this isn't an actual thing of what a movie will be, just could be. Let's hope something cool is done with this, then.

UPDATE: Asylum has an interview with Michael Jai White about the Mortal Kombat: Rebirth trailer. He would love to play Jax if the real movie got made. I would also like to see him play Jax.
