My First Earthquake
Since we moved out to traffic congested California over a year ago I had yet to experience an earthquake. I might have felt very small quakes, but they lasted about a second and I don't know if they were actually quakes or just a case of bad pluming. I knew a real quake would happen at some point and tonight it did. I felt the edge of a 5.6 quake rocking the Bay Area. I was chilling in my favorite chair when the building started to rumble and shake. My room felt like it was riding on the waves of the ocean. It lasted for about a minute and my legs were still getting used to it for a few minutes afterwards. We just moved and the epicenter of the quake was much closer to our old apartment; I just felt the reverberating side of it. If we hadn't moved I certainly would have felt it a lot more. According to the nightly news there was some minor damage. For you California regulars and those in other high quake-prone areas this may not be such a big deal. For me, being born and raised in the Midwest, this was an experience that was exciting and a little freaky. I can now add this to my "awesome time" list near the entries of my first successful sho-ryu-ken and first bacon-wrapped hotdog. I'll always remember my first 5.6. - Shawn - 10/30/07 |
