The Monkey's News Box: 1/26/14

  • NECA showed off the paint masters for Pacific Rim Series 3 Cherno Alpha and Coyote Tango figures. These are looking awesome and better than the previous series. Hopefully they'll be easier to find, but I doubt it.

Cherno Alpha and Coyote Tango, two Jaegers way cooler than "analog" Gipsy Danger.

  • If you ever wanted a Macross (Robotech) Gunpod scaled for humans you'll have a chance to buy one at the Arcadia booth at Wonder festival 2014 Winter... for over $1000. And there will only be 10 available. The Gunpod lights up, makes sounds, and vibrates. Sometime after the show Arcadia will have U.N. Spacy branded Gunpods available on their website, probably also for an extremely high price.

For $1000 or probably more you can be as cool as this guy.

  • ThreeA's Invincible Iron Man figure will be going up for pre-orders the first week of February. There will be four variants with classic, Silver Centurion, Stark Industries prototype, and Stealth. The prototype is a ThreeA exclusive and will be available singly or in the four-pack set.

  • Capcom had some 30th Anniversary stuff you could only win from some raffle in Japan. This included Monster Hunter Felynes dressed as Capcom characters. Felynes as Mega Man, the blue Sengoku Basara guy, and Amaterasu are super cute, but the Felynes dressed as Morrigan, Chun Li, and Phoenix Wright's Maya are quite disturbing.

  • The Transformers Masterpiece Prowl will probably be a Toys 'R' Us exclusive. Maybe he'll be easier to get than Soundwave.

I could see this becoming a scene in a new Gundam anime.

TV / Movies

  • Instead of waiting to surprise people, Marvel announced that a certain character in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D will become Deathlok. That's a huge spoiler! Way to spoil it for everybody, Marvel! I won't say who the character is here because I'm not that big of an asshole, but if you watch the show then you probably know who it is.

He's a dandy... man-machine-monster guy.

  • There's a commercial for the Subaru Forester featuring titans from Attack on Titan. Because when I think of running away form titans I think I immediately try to find the nearest Subaru.

  • There will be a Godzilla graphic novel based on the upcoming movie. Godzilla: Awakening is set before the movie, which makes me wonder how much Godzilla will be in the book.

  • Got 3 hours to kill? Here's almost every NES title screen. In mostly alphabetical order.

  • The Hello Kitty slime creatures from the Puzzle & Dragons / Hello Kitty World crossover are pretty frightening. They're disembodied gooey Hello Kitty heads!

  • Namco Bandai is changing its name to Bandai Namco. It was known as Namco Bandai in the U.S., but as Bandai Namco in Japan, so it'll all be unified. No wonder I was confused when I saw it written both ways. Namco Bandai sounds better, though.

  • King is trying to trademark the words candy and saga for use in videogames and clothing. This is one of the most ridiculous things that has happened in videogaming and life. These are common words! Candyland has existed long before these jerks. They're also going after games with the word Saga in it, like the indie game Banner Saga. I've never played a King game before and now I never will. Seriously, read this post about it at Forbes.

  • Gigantic Army reminds me of Cybernator and looks awesome. It's out on February 5th.

  • This To the Death game looks cool. It's kind of a shooter fighting hybrid game. There's a Kickstarter going for it if you want to support it.

The Monkey's News Box: 1/19/14

  • 2014 is G.I. Joe's 50th anniversary! This year's G.I. Joe Con will be in Dallas, TX with an exclusive zombie-themed figure set, because... zombies! I love the ARBCO Technician Lab-Rat figure. The club should make a version of him for the next round of subscription figures for those of us that can't go to the con. The Collector's Club knows it's the 50th anniversary, but does Hasbro? They have yet to announce anything regarding G.I. Joe. Hasbro started the Transformers 30th anniversary celebration for 2014 in 2013, like the Thrilling 30, so where's the G.I. Joe love?

50 years of crazy adventures, and now more zombies.

  • How about some Rocket Raccoon and the Guardians of the Galaxy promotional art? It's kind of funny how Rocket Raccoon is the biggest character in the art. And there's going to be a plastic straw cup!

It looks like rocket Raccoon's gun will be as big as him. Perfect.

  • Sanrio's newest character is a salmon fillet. A SALMON FILLET. It's name is Kirimi-chan. One of her quotes is, "Please eat me, I'm delicious." Sanrio have lost their damn minds.

Couldn't it at least have been a tilapia or a halibut? Or a full fish?

  • Some Sunday Q&A news from ThreeA. 1) ThreeA is making an Elite from Halo and Master Chief is coming soon. 2) ThreeA will be releasing 2000AD figures in waves, so a bunch at a time. 3) A Half-Life Gordon Freeman with Dog set is being made. Start saving up for all those awesome ThreeA toys.

  • Tsume's Ultra Street Fighter IV Chun Li and Vega statues are looking incredible and are up for pre-order. The two statues can be placed together for an ultra awesome battle scene.

  • The Xenogears Perfect Works book is getting a reprint in Japan. The book has art not in the game  and fills in story gaps. We can only hope that some company will translate it and publish it over in the U.S.

  • Dragon's Crown Amazon has a figure coming out in a spine snapping pose. The figure looks a little less defined than in the game, which is probably good.

  • First 4 Figures have posted concept art of their Mega Man and Proto Man statues. Mega Man would look better in better pose; he's just running. The Proto Man concept looks great, though!

  • Kill Bill Minimates are coming in honor of the film's 10th anniversary. The set includes a bloodied Bride, O-Ren Ishii, Gogo Yubari and Sofie Fatale.

  • Bluefin Tamashii Nations will be doing something with Mario. A super-articulated Bowser, like the S.H. MonsterArts figures, would be the best. Just saying.

  • In Catlateral Damage you play as a cat knocking over all your owner's stuff. It's absolutely fantastic.

Nightmare fuel.

  • It looks like Disney has abandoned Star Wars 1313. They have not renewed the trademark and, if Disney's trend on other Star Wars media is any indication, then they won't ever renew it. Another potentially great Star Wars project is gone.

  • This new Dark Souls II trailer needs a severe audio remixing. There's so much going on that it all just mashes together. It looks amazing, though.

  • Killer Instinct's new Spinal looks like he belongs in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies in his first screenshots. There's almost too much going on with him, with tattered clothing, ropes around him, massively huge shield, and something on his back. Is that a ship wheel?

  • Toro from Sony and Monomi from Danganronpa 2 have cameos in Terraria in Japan. I might play this game if I can get a Toro costume.

  • Man At Arms (not the He-Man guy) made Sephiroth's Masamune from Final Fantasy VII. The super long sword looks a little wobbly, but cuts good.

  • I have no idea what the hell is going on in this Kodoku teaser. Kodoku will be on the PS4 and Vita, whatever it is.

TV / Movies

He's a dandy guy. In the Batmobile.

  • Doomed, a documentary about Roger Corman's never-released 1994 Fantastic Four movie to show us all the trouble the movie went through. Will this help it finally get an official Blu-ray release? That awful Captain America movie was eventually released on Blu-ray, so who knows.

  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 6 will begin airing in February... in Germany. There are episode synopsis over at Jedi News is you want to spoil stuff for yourself. It's a start, but when are they airing in the U.S.?

  • Thomas Kretchmann will be a villain in The Avengers: Age of Ultron movie. It's suspected that he'll play Baron Von Strucker, the leader of Hydra.

  • Michael Douglas will play Hank Pym in the Antman movie. So, apparently Paul Rudd is a different Antman. I don't think I knew, or just never paid attention, that there was more than one Antman.

  • Superman / Batman, or whatever the movie will be called, is being pushed back to May 6th, 2016, over a year later than originally planned. Well, at least the movie wasn't already completed, like what happened with G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

The Monkey's News Box: 1/12/14

  • The first trailer for Alien: Isolation has finally arrived. It's a first-person survival horror with Ripley's daughter, Amanda. It's seems a little weird that Ripley's daughter also had an, possibly similar, Alien experience, but maybe it will make sense in the story. So far it's looking good and I'm sure Sega is keeping a close eye on this one so that it doesn't end up like Colonial Marines.

  • A guy by the YouTube name Master of Luck changed his Gamertag to Xbox Sign Out and plays Call of Duty: Ghosts. Hilarity ensues. I'm surprised Microsoft actually allows people to have "Xbox" in their Gamertag.

  • ThreeA posted a new photo of their Robot Pyro from Team Fortress 2. It's not final, but it's looking cool. If I were a Team Fortress 2 fan I would be all over these.

Do Team Fortress robots wear hats?

  • ThreeA will be re-launching their 2000AD line this year. All the figure will be 1/12 scale, so around 6" or so. They plan on making as many characters as they can. I would love a Judge Dredd with a Lawmaster from them. They already made a 1/12 Mongrol a while back, so those who have it already started their collection and those that just heard of ThreeA making 2000AD figures are probably scrambling to get it.

  • I haven't watched The Simpsons in years, but the Lego Simpsons House is pretty damn impressive. It's basically the full house, with garage, car, and six figures. It's also $200, but for as big and detailed as it is, it's probably worth it.

TV / Movies

  • The first Game of Thrones Season 4 trailer is here! Is Winter still coming? Will the ice zombies take over the world? Do we get to see more dragons? Which characters that people actually like will die? It's going to be a long wait until April 6th.

  • If you want to translate all the space words in Space Dandy, you now can. It turns out the language is a simple Alphabet substitution cipher, including numbers 0-9. Thanks to Altair & Vega for cracking the code. The words are romanized Japanese, so there may be a little awkwardness in translating some of it. I wonder how many times "Boobies" appears in the show.

He's a dandy guy. In space.

  • Somehow there is going to be another live-action Tekken movie, which is surprising considering the first one was basically direct-to-Blu-ray/DVD. Tekken: A Man Called X will be a prequel and will star Kane Kosugi as X. Who the heck is X? He's not in any Tekken game, so maybe he's revealed to be someone else later in the movie? UPDATE: Kane Kosugi has posted a retraction. The movie he'll be in will be called Agent X and has nothing to do with Tekken. I wonder why he mentioned Tekken originally.

  • A new Sailor Moon anime is coming in July. Get ready for a mass amount of Sailor Moon cosplay based on the updated uniforms.

Comics (Con)

You going? You should go.

  • Peter Parker is returning as Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man #1 in April. We all knew this would happen eventually, it was only a matter of time. That cover art looks terrible, though.

The Monkey's News Box: 1/5/14

Movies / TV

  • It's the first still of Rocket Raccoon from the Guardians of the Galaxy movie! Okay, it's a group shot with Gamora, Star Lord, Drax, and Groot are in the photo too, but Rocket Raccoon is the most important of the bad-asses here.

So how much bigger will Rocket Raccoon's gun be than him?

  • It's the new Turtle Van from the live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. Apparently this is older news, but I didn't see it until this week, so maybe you haven't either. I like that it's an old style van and don't mind that the windows continue the "turtle shell" graphics, but why are the tires so far out from the body? If the tires retracted under the body then it'd be cool.

Those tires have to be violating some kind of safety code.

  • Have you seen the trailer for Cuphead yet? It's a run 'n' gun done in the style of a 1930s cartoon. It looks great and really captures the style of the time. There's a missed opportunity with Cuphead's straw being the gun, though.

  • The Xbox One could have been released without a disc drive. Man, I wonder how different the current state of systems would be if they had removed the disc drive. They certainly would have gotten some more hate.

  • Ryo Hazuki is in the mobile version in of Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed, driving an arcade cabinet car that transforms from Outrun, to Space Harrier, to Hang-On. Man, I hope he can be be put in the console versions.

  • More Marvel games have been taken off PSN, XBLA, and Steam. Now Deadpool, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and a bunch of other Spider-Man and X-Men games are gone. Better start tracking down physical discs if you want to play any of these. This is why an all-digital future would be bad because if you didn't buy the games when they were available then you never will.

  • The softcover version of Marvel Vs. Capcom: Official Complete Works will have an pixel sprite dust jacket exclusive to the Udon Store. Arnold Tsang created new 2D sprites for all the characters adorning the dust jacket. The dust jacket is available on the first printing of the softcover, but will somehow be available separately in April 2014.

An incredible dust jacket for the softcover debut of Marvel Vs. Capcom: Official Complete Works.

  • Sub Zero is Pop Culture Shock's next Mortal Kombat 1/4 scale statue. The regular version features the ice ninja's ice sword, while the exclusive has his ice blast.

  • We are likely to see some photos of upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie figures in a few weeks from Toy Fair 2014, but for now you can read a description of the figures from someone who might have seen them. The descriptions sound completely plausible for the figures.
