SDCC '14: Square Enix Play Arts Kai

Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, DC, Predators, Titanfall, Static Arts, Assassin's Creed, and More

Final Fantasy: Red XIII is still coming along and looks better each time I see it. Fran is finally being made as a Play Arts Kai, which is super awesome and I'm sure Balthier won't be too far behind. The Advent Children Tifa prototype was on display along with Barret and mopey Cloud. There were other FFVII figures on display because VII is what the people want. The Theatrhythm static Arts figures are nice and cute, but there's just something about those rosy cheeked versions of the characters that don't do it for me in figure form. I do really like the Chocobo and Moogle, though.

Metal Gear Solid: Square Enix is getting ready for the real Metal Gear Solid 5, The Phantom Pain, with many Play Arts Kai figures. Quiet, Skull Face, Snake, and the mysterious Man on Fire were all on display. Who is that fiery dude? The bullets in his fist could be a major hint. The exclusive for this year was a bronzed Solid Snake. It's a pretty bland exclusive, but it doesn't matter that much since it's Metal Gear.

DC: Square Enix is getting crazy with the DC Variant Play Arts Kai figures. Famed Final Fantasy designer Tetsuya Nomura designed a Batman that looks very future-looking and has a giant ridiculous wingspan. There are also lots of Batman variants with Steampunk Batman, Bushido Batman, Spartan Batman, and Cowboy Batman. The Variant Harley Quinn looks more like a jester than ever. Darkseid looks way to slender for my supreme evil guy liking, though.

I must have missed the announcement, or forgotten, of Play arts Kai Predators. These are looking pretty badass. If these Predators end up having removable masks, then they will definitely be worth getting.

I wasn't a big fan of Appleseed Alpha as it felt very cookie-cutter for an anime movie, but the figures are looking fantastic. As for the Titanfall Atlas figure, the prototype looks great, but it's a bummer that the pilot is not articulated. Just give fans a pilot articulated enough so it can sit in the cockpit. Oh well. Check out lots more Play Arts Kai figures and more in the photos below including a new Master Chief, Assassin's Creed,
