Toy Fair '13 Thoughts: McFarlane Toys

Halo, Assassin's Creed, Rabbids, and The Walking Dead

Halo

McFarlane Toys isn't done with Halo yet and had Halo 4 Series 2 on display with the kinds of figures we've come to expect. New figures and variants are the Didact with an alternate unmasked head, blue-ish (cobalt?) Elite Ranger, Storm Jackal, purple Spartan CIO, orange Spartan Scout, and yet another Halo 4 version of Master Chief for some reason. The Didact looks great and it's very cool that it includes an alternate head. The GameStop exclusive red & black Spartan was also at the show and is actually a part of Series 2 (it says so on the packaging). Photos of the rest of Series 2 are at the end of this article.

Disappointingly, there were not any new Micro Ops on display. I loved the line and hope McFarlane Toys isn't done with the Micro Ops. I really want at least one of each vehicle all in-scale, especially an in-scale Elephant so I can store the rest of the vehicles. Maybe there's still more to come?

The Didact has some reclaiming to get to.

Assassins Creed

McFarlane Toys now has the Assassin's Creed license which means we'll get detailed figures other than NECA's strict diet of Ezio repaints. The Game Stars figures which gave us a decent 3.75" Doctor and Harlequin, but those don't match McFarlane levels of detail. The first series is all Assassin's Creed III figures with Connor, Haytham, Ratonhnhake, and a secret figure. There will also be a 4-pack box set that looks like it will have the four main assassin's in the series: Altair, Ezio, Conner, and Aveline. I like the one-stop assassins box. Fans won't have to hunt around for each assassin if they want all of them.

Since NECA didn't give us anything but Ezios, I would love it if McFarlane would make a Doctor, Harlequin, Jester, or any of the assassin ladies from the multiplayer.

All the assassin's in one box.

Rabbids

McFarlane Toys is also bringing out a ton of Rabbids figurines and statues. That's cool, but are these going to end up being peg warmers like the previous Rabbids figures? I have exactly one Rabbid figure and it's only because it's wearing a Splinter Cell outfit. I still need to find a Rabbid in Assassin's Creed garb. In other words, these don't interest me because they're not crossover Rabbids, but I don't want to see them die at retail like the other Rabbids figurines seemed to do.

Rabbids are coming back to shelves and may just stay there despite looking cool.

The Walking Dead

If you collect Walking Dead figures I'm sure there's cool stuff coming out like comic Glenn in SWAT gear and Merle with metal stub, but what stands out for me is The Walking Dead Season 3 Blu-ray case. Now, I thought the Season 2 Limited Edition zombie head was awful. The season 3 case is the Governor's zombie head wall. It even lights up, which is pretty cool. I have no intention of actually buying this, but at least this case looks very cool and could be good for dioramas with the figures. You get form and function with this one.

Now McFarlane Toys needs to make a Governor figure to sit and stare at this like a weirdo.

More Halo 4 Series 2

Blue ranger Elite looks like a spaceman.

What happened to the Jackals between Halo 3 and 4? Or is this one just a fatty?

Orange Spartans are usually reserved as Toys 'R' Us exclusives, so will this one be, too?

Purple CIO Spartan kind of has a Splinter Cell thing going on.

Another Master Chief? What's different this time? Oh look, a mini Cortana.

The Dydact's alternate unmasked head.
