Worms (Mobile) -Team 17/THQ Wireless (2004) -played on a Sanyo 8200
Summary: The worms have the arsenal, but lack the brains to use it.
The 2D Worms games were fun and addicting. Little worms and a vast assortment of different weapons made the game a complete blast to play with multiple players. It’s understandable that a game like Worms, with its randomly generated environments, huge allotment of weapons, and long list of play modes, would be scaled down for the phone. What is there, however, is completely devoid of anything that made the Worms games fun and addictive in the first place. The game says it has randomly generated environments, but it’s a lie. There are essentially only two small islands that you play on; beach and snow. Sometimes a couple of palm trees or snowmen will be in the middle of the island in an attempt to throw off your targeting. Each side gets only two worms and there are five weapons from the regular games: rockets, grenades, bombs, cluster bombs, and dynamite. You may use a few of the weapons, but the computer team will only make use of the rockets. The dynamite is a pointless weapon in this version because, ironically, the worms are fairly immobile in this mobile version. The worms can only move slowly from side to side and there are no jetpacks or ninja ropes present in the game. Most of the time, the two teams are separated by trees or snowmen which makes the dynamite even more useless. In fact, using any of the weapons is pointless because the intelligence of the computer is some of the worst A.I. I’ve ever encountered. It’s so bad that you don’t even have to play the game to win. The computer worms will effectively kill themselves. They will aim their weapons straight up, down at their feet, or they’ll just wiggle away and commit suicide by falling into the water. Your worms may get hit a couple times, but you’ll easily win without pressing a button. Sadly, this mobile version of Worms is not worth a second of your time.
